Obituary

Robert Louis Powell April 2, 1948 – August 30, 2026

Robert Louis “Bob” Powell, affectionately known as “Wild Dog,” age 78, passed away at Hillcrest Nursing & Rehab Center in Magee, MS on August 30, 2026. Born and raised in Mendenhall, MS, Bob grew up playing football, baseball, and running track. A gifted athlete, he graduated from Mendenhall High School in 1967 and went on to attend Copiah-Lincoln Community College and Jackson State University on football scholarships. Bob had a deep love for the outdoors and the people who made his community home. He was happiest living at Phillips Lake, fishing from his boat, riding his side-by-side up to The Old House to hunt, and socializing with friends. Those who knew Bob will remember him for his quick wit, great storytelling, unique personality, and ability to bring laughter and life to any gathering.

He was a member of the Mendenhall Masonic Lodge, Buckmasters Association, Mendenhall National Guard, Mendenhall Methodist Church (now The Church of Mendenhall), and attended Bethany Methodist Church in D'Lo. Bob went to work offshore for H&P Oil Company for 20 years. Afterwards, he went on to work for The Mississippi Department of Transportation in Jackson, MS. He loved what he did and stayed a loyal employee until his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph "Joe" Jones Powell and Lottie Grace (Coleman) Powell.

He is survived by his daughter, Jodi Lynn Powell; his sister, Linda Jo Powell Stubblefield (Rick); his nephew, Jason Powell Stubblefield (Judith Ann); his four great-nieces, Marilyn, Vivian, Eleanor, and Priscilla Stubblefield; and a host of cousins, extended family members, and friends who he loved dearly. Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 4:00 PM on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at The Church of Mendenhall (formerly Mendenhall Methodist Church). The Funeral Service will begin at 4:00 PM, followed immediately by a graveside service at Mendenhall Cemetery.

Active Pallbearers: Jay Phillips, Gerald Hilton, Chad Carmichael, Franklin Phillips, Walker Phillips and Dylan Hallman.

Honorary Pallbearers: Tony Phillips, Paul Phillips, Larry Munn, Lance Munn, Billy George Powell, Lantz Foster, Rusty May, Stanley Berry, Harry Rankin, Brent Thompson, Joe Guana, Leon Phillips, Pat Phillips, and Rick Stubblefield.
