Obituary

Ida "Sue" Smith, age 82, passed peacefully on December 22, 2024, at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, MS. She was born on January 29, 1942, and lived a life full of love, faith, and devotion to her family. Sue was married to the love of her life, James "Percy" Smith, for over 61 years, a bond that served as the foundation of a beautiful family and a life well-lived in Puckett, MS.

Sue was a proud graduate of White Oak High School, Jones Junior College, and Fondren Beauty School. She spent many years sharing her gifts with others, particularly her love for cooking. Her home was always open to guests, and her table was never without plenty of food to share. Sue had a special passion for decorating during all the holiday seasons, with Christmastime being her favorite. Her Christmas displays—both inside and outside her home—were a reflection of her joyful spirit and love for the holidays.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved son, James Henry Smith. She is survived by her devoted husband Percy; four loving children, Janice Hawkins (Jeff), Jerry Smith (Heather), Judy Jones (Shayne), and Jason Smith (Kim); 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, all of whom she cherished deeply.

Her deep faith in Christ was evident in the well-worn pages of her Bible, filled with dates, sermons, and special memories of pastors throughout the years. She lived a life dedicated to her faith and her family, and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

A celebration of Sue's life will be held at Colonial Chapel-Mims Mitchell Funeral Home in Mendenhall, MS on December 24th.

The family invites friends and loved ones to join for visitation from 9:00 am-10:00 am at Colonial Chapel in Mendenhall, MS. A private family graveside ceremony will follow at the Burnham Cemetery on Gabe Holcomb Road.

Sue's legacy of love, hospitality, and faith will live on in the hearts of those she touched. May she rest in peace, surrounded by the love of Christ.
