Henry Harvey Blakeney, 91, of Magee, Mississippi, passed away Sunday, December 19, 2021 at Covington County Hospital in Collins. He was born Tuesday, April 8, 1930.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 26, 2021 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Magee.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM prior to Funeral Services that will be held Monday, December 27, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Magee. A Masonic graveside service will follow in Magee City Cemetery. Bro. Raymond Jeffcoat and Bro. Gary Blakeney will officiate. Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Magee is in charge of arrangements. Harvey was born in Smith County, Mississippi, and attended school and graduated from Taylorsville High School in 1949 where he played football and was a member of their first championship football team. He served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1953. Harvey graduated from Mississippi State University's College of Agriculture in 1958.
Harvey worked in management with McCarty Farms (Magee) for nearly 20 years starting in 1959. After leaving McCarty Farms, Harvey established Blakeney Electrical and Plumbing Supplies in Magee. He also operated commercial laying hen operations and raised cattle. Harvey was inducted into the Simpson County Cattlemen's Association Hall of Fame during 2019.
Harvey commenced his decades of public service in Simpson County shortly after moving to Magee in 1959. He joined the Magee Volunteer Fire Department where he served for many years. Harvey served as an adult leader in the local Boy Scout troop. For more than four decades, Harvey supported high school athletics by serving as a referee of high school football games throughout central Mississippi. Harvey served as a Magee Police Officer, an emergency medical technician, Simpson County Deputy Sheriff and Simpson County Coroner. He also served his community on the Board of Magee Public Schools and the Board of the Simpson General Hospital. Harvey was proud of his accomplishments as a twice-elected member of the Simpson County Board of Supervisors. He served on the Board when it passed the May 2003 Resolution in support of the R.S. Parker Academic Building for Copiah-Lincoln Community College Simpson County Center. Harvey was heavily involved in the planning and construction of the Simpson County jail.
Harvey was a member of Siloam Baptist Church in the Siloam Community of Magee. He was a mason, a member of Oak Hill Lodge #553 F & AM and completed 50 years of service as a Master Mason in 2019.
Harvey was a beloved role model and a selfless public servant. He knew many of the residents of Simpson County as friends and colleagues. He was loved and will be missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Euphemia Blakeney; two sisters and nine brothers.
Survivors include his wife of fifty one years, Bobbye Blakeney; his four children, Ralph Blakeney and wife, Judy of Mission Viejo, California, David Blakeney of Little Rock, Arkansas, Judy Byrd and husband, Steve of Mendenhall, Allison Dyar of Magee; his five grandchildren, Blake Byrd and wife, Kayla, Becca Bridges and husband, Phillip, Hank Blakeney, Maya Blakeney, and Jillian Strite; his four great- grandchildren, Blakeney and Chandler Bridges, Baker Byrd, and Kaiden Blakeney; and host of cousins, nephews, nieces, and other family members.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Siloam Baptist Church, 268 Siloam Church Rd, Magee, Mississippi 39111.
