Charles
Price
October 1, 1931 – November 6, 2022
Honoring the life of Charles Silas Price
Charles Price, born on October 1, 1931, in a humble wooden house down a gravel road in Mendenhall, Mississippi, was the sixth of seven children born to John Alonzo and Emma Pearl (Waggoner) Price. He often spoke of the little three-room house, warmed by two fireplaces, where he and his younger brother shared a small back bedroom near the kitchen. He often talked about drawing water from the well, trips to the outhouse in the darkest of nights, and feeding the chickens through the cracks in the floor. He grew up poor, but that only made for many great memories to share with his family and friends.
He attended first through twelfth grade and graduated from Mendenhall Elementary/Jr. High/High School and later attended the Jackson branch of Mississippi State University. Following his education, he married the love of his life, Martha Lee Gartee in February of 1954. Charles and Martha's marriage continued 67 years until her death on August 21, 2021. Charles served his country in the United States Army stationed at Ft. Jackson, SC, and at Ft. Myer, VA. where he was assigned to the Pentagon. Shortly after moving to Virginia, they gave birth to their first son Charles S. Price Jr. (Chuck) in May of 1955. Chuck would survive six weeks and was then laid to rest in the Arlington National Cemetery.
Charles and Martha moved back to Jackson, MS in 1956 to raise their family. They celebrated a very fruitful career of 40 years with Mississippi Farm Bureau Insurance company where he retired as Vice President, Treasurer, and Accounting Director. Charles and his family were longtime members of Woodville Heights Baptist Church where Charles was a deacon and member of several committees over the years. Charles always loved to sing and never missed an opportunity to be in the church choir. He and Martha later retired to his hometown of Mendenhall where they spent the next 25 years enjoying life, family and friends. The house Charles took his first breath in could be seen from their back porch.
They were also active in their new church home of FBC Mendenhall.
In his adult years, Charles never had an enemy. Everyone that knew him called him friend. He spent a lifetime helping others, making those around him laugh and enjoy life. He never turned away strangers that knocked on his door if he could possibly help them. If you talked with Charles for 10 minutes, you felt like you had a friend for life. He genuinely loved and cared for people and, of course, his Mississippi State Bulldogs!
Charles peacefully entered into eternity at the age of 91 in the evening of November 6, 2022 in Chattanooga, TN, in the home where he had been residing with his youngest son and family for the past 2.5 years.
In addition to his parents, John Alonzo Price and Emma Pearl Waggoner, Charles is predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Martha Lee Gartee Price; his first born son Charles Silas Price Jr.; his brothers and sisters William T. Price, Earlene Price Adams, James G. Price, Doris Price Padgett, and Louise Price Hallman.
Surviving family members include his youngest brother John P. Price, his daughter, Pam Price Harpole (Kirk) of Hattiesburg, MS., sons John R. (Randy) Price (Kelly) of Brandon, MS, and David C. Price (Karen) of Chattanooga, TN.
