Betty Sue Tanner Hamilton, lovingly known to many as "Maw Betty", 90 of Mize, MS, passed away peacefully, Saturday, April 4, 2026, at Forest General Hospital in Hattiesburg, MS, surrounded by love ones. She lived a long life marked by strength, resilience, and deep love for her family.
Maw Betty was the kind of woman people leaned on. Throughout her life she faced many challenges, but she met them with determination and fighting spirit that defined who she was. She devoted her life to her family, raising her children and playing a special role in the lives of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even great-great-grandchildren.
She found joy in the simple things in life. Maw Betty loved fishing, spending time in her garden, and relaxing with her favorite soap operas. She was known for being both deeply loving and a little spicy, never afraid to speak her mind. Her strength, humor, and unwavering love will forever be remembered by those who knew her.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 9, 2026, from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Magee. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at 2:00 pm at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Magee. Burial will follow in Calvary Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Mize. Bro. Joe Metts, Bro. David Hays, and Bro. Larry Dennis, Jr. will officiate. Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Magee is in charge of arrangements. 601-849-5031.
Maw Betty is survived by her sister Frances Ferguson and daughters, Diana (Gayle) Hosey and Deborah (Nathan) Welch.
She leaves behind her beloved grandchildren: Angela Turner, David Hosey, Bo (Charlotte) Cook, Timothy (April) Hosey, Kat (Matt) Green, and Kayla (Aaron) Pettigrew.
Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren: Joseph (Alex) Turner, Tyler Rayborn, David Eric (Myranda) Hosey, Isaac Turner, Kenzie Cook, Jamie Layton, Matthew Gayle Hosey, Trevor Cook, Lexi Pettigrew, Colin Leftwich, Madelyn Turner, Jaxon Hosey, Abbygail Sue Hosey, and Kason Pettigrew.
She was also blessed with great-great-grandchildren: Aubree Rayborn, Grayson, Sadie, and Carson Hosey.
Maw Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Bertie Rosetta Mayfield Tanner and John Melvin Tanner; her daughter, Judy Carol Allen; her husband, Charley Hamilton, brothers, James Malcom, Wendell, Jessie and Eugene Tanner, sisters Christine Tanner Lumpkin and Patsy Tanner Yarbrough. Son in law Gayle Hosey and great grandchild Ashley Diane Hosey.
Pallbearers are Bo Cook, Isaac Turner, Aaron Pettigrew, Trevor Cook, Timothy Hosey, David Eric Hosey, Charles James, and Colin Leftwich.
Honorary Pallbearer will be David Hosey.
Though Maw Betty may no longer walk physically beside us, the love she planted in her family will continue to grow for generations to come.
